Professional in style, traditional in tone, Ottawa Little Theatre has been a vital part of the Ottawa Arts Community for almost 100 years, making it the longest running community theatre in Canada. Between 50,000 and 60,000 patrons walk through our doors each season to enjoy our plays, special events and more. As a charitable not-for-profit, volunteer-based organization, OLT is financially dependent upon subscribers and their donations for its operation and maintenance.
What is a "Little Theatre"? With a 462 seat auditorium, and fully licensed lobby, OLT is anything but "little". The Little Theatre movement started in 1913 in Chicago, and quickly swept across North America. Little Theatre's were created in response to the explosion of movie theatre houses- the Little Theatre became a place to see new, provocative plays often with social themes (unlike the commercially minded movies). Today, there are still many Little Theatres across North America. But "Little Theatre" still refers to a community theatre, where professional actors, directors and designers work along side new talent, all volunteering their time to produce popular plays.
OLT has a long and illustrious history, and many of the actors who stood on the OLT stage have gone on to successful careers in film and television, and continue to do so!
